What to expect at your first consultation with a maxillofacial surgeon
How long the visit takes, what is reviewed, which images may be ordered and what you leave with: a diagnosis, a written plan and your questions answered.
A consultation lasts 30 to 45 minutes. It is the first step of any treatment—an implant, a wisdom tooth, orthognathic surgery—and its purpose is to understand your case before proposing anything.
History and reason for the visit
Medical history, medications, allergies and what brings you are reviewed: pain, a missing tooth, a referral from your dentist or orthodontist.
Clinical exam
Examination of the mouth, joint and tissues. Images you already have are reviewed, or the necessary ones are ordered.
Diagnostic imaging
Panoramic X-ray or CT scan (CBCT) when the case requires it: bone, roots, nerves and sinuses.
Diagnosis and plan
What was found, the treatment options, timelines and expected recovery are explained, with a written estimate.
